Campaign Watch: Portmans snaps up Kelly Framel of The Glamourai, June 2011 campaign

Bloggers as models isn’t an uncommon occurrence these days, but for a local fashion label to embrace the phenomenon is pleasantly surprising. High street brand Portmans have enlisted the help of Kelly Framel, known for her personal style blog The Glamourai to style herself in their clothes for their June 2011 ad campaign.

Known for her talents for mixing luxury items with high street brands as well as a knack for mixing prints and colours, Framel’s list of blogging achievements also include designing a bag with Coach.

“I think Portmans does an outstanding job of making clothes that are versatile, affordable and still completely desirable,” said Framel. “They’re trendy, but won’t quickly look dated and everything is made to mix and match, so a few pieces per season can easily revitalise one’s wardrobe.”

iBlogFashion & Beauty teams up with Stellar for blogger panel

We’re about a month late with this post, our myriad of computer issues since the event (on October 26th) is really no excuse.

We held the blogger panel event for PR and marketing executives with the aim of educating the room full of 100 – 120 people on blogging, especially in the world of fashion and beauty blogging. Renee Creer from Steller held court as our resident MC while the panel consisted of Elise Phillips of Stuff That I Bought and The Nail File, Tania Braukamper of Fashionising, Sarah Macrae of Bella Sugar Australia and myself, Helen Lee, iBlogFashion & Beauty Founder and editor of SASSYBELLA.com.

Topics we covered included:

New Influencers + Traditional Journalism

  • Peer to peer opinion/recommendation now most trusted source of information
  • Bloggers as opinion leaders & independent voices
  • What do blogs offer over traditional media?
  • What are the key differences between bloggers and beauty/fashion journalists? (trained v amateur, paid v ‘for love’)
  • The personal nature of blogging
  • Blogger communities

What are the common PR misconceptions

  • That blogs are mouthpieces for PR messages
  • That blogs are a cheap way to generate online buzz
  • That blogs are a free distribution channel. I.e. Bloggers will just copy your press release on to their sites.
  • That bloggers can be bought?
  • That bloggers are obligated to write on your product, event etc

Article Watch: Fashion Bloggers, Digital Dictators or Fashion Queens?

There was an interestingly biased commentary piece published in Australia’s premier newspaper The Australian last week where Vogue.com.au’s Online Editor Damien Woolnough called fashion bloggers “Nikon-toting bottom feeders on the fashion food chain”.

Needless to say I was less than impressed and was glad when Fairfax journalist Georgina Robinson wrote a piece for Sydney Morning Herald about French fashion blogger Garance Dore and pointed out some of the discrepancies in Woolnough’s attack.

Obviously not all former print media members are open to fashion bloggers, even if they now ply their trade by running a fashion website whose main source of traffic is through their user-generated content on their popular fashion forums.

Sportsgirl dedicates window displays to Fashion Hayley, Kat George & 4th and Bleeker

Canada’s Holt Renfrew honored the likes of The Sartorialist, BryanBoy, Garance Dore, Sea of Shoes, Jak & Jil and I Want I Got with window displays dedicated to their blogs… and locally Sportsgirl have joined in the fashion blogger celebrations with three blogger styled windows this month.

And the lucky bloggers? Hayley Hughes of Fashion Hayley is featured in the Chapel Street store in South Yarra, VIC, Kat George of Style Lines is featured in the Chadstone store in Chadstone, VIC and lastly Alexandra Spencer of 4th and Bleeker received a window in the Paddington store in Paddington, NSW.

All three were able to create a one-off installation in their Sportsgirl window to bring their blog and inspirations to life.

Congratulations ladies!

Fashion bloggers around the world are focused on one thing at the moment. New York Fashion Week and then London, Milan and Paris. So it comes as no surprise that fashion bloggers are a very hot topic at the moment. Article watch: 10 Fashion Blogger Stereotypes, Or Why Brands Still Fear Working With Bloggers

Yuli Ziv talks about fashion blogger stereotypes and explains why they are very wrong.

In Issue 1 of iBlogFashion we talked about the different types of fashion blogging, but there are still many assumptions about how fashion bloggers are all teenagers, skinny and picture perfect, ego driven and attention seeking or just in it for the free swag.

It’s worth taking a few minutes to read why we’re not all in it for the freebies or are attention seeking and loud.
